My Top 5 Publishing Highlights

Just over a year has passed since Caught Inside, my debut YA LGBTQ novel, was released from Beaten Track Publishing. It’s been an amazing time, a real emotional journey, mostly positive, but with some inevitable down days thrown in along the way. I’ve been looking back over this last twelve months, reflecting on everything I’ve achieved and what I’ve learned about myself, and I thought I’d share with you some of the highlights of my first year as a published author.

  1. Holding my finished book. This is a moment I’ll never forget, the moment when the box arrived in the post. I tore off the tape, plunge my arm up to the elbow in packaging as though fishing for a prize in a Lucky Dip, and drew out one of the shiny new novels. As I ran my fingers over the glossy cover, stroked the crisp pages, lifted the book to my nose to breathe in that unmistakable smell of paper and ink, I remember thinking…wow, I actually wrote this. It’s a surreal feeling, but incredibly special.
  2. The Perfect Review. I’ve been a reader for long enough to realise that not everyone was going to fall in love with my novel, however much I might want them to. I knew some readers would hate my heroes, or at the very least, hate the way they behave for much of the story. I was prepared for that. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the rush of pure exhilaration that comes with stumbling across a perfect review, a review from someone who loved everything about the book, a review that makes you go…yes, this reader really gets it. A single review like that is worth a dozen bad ones.
  3. Award Nominations. This has definitely been one of the most rewarding and self-affirming aspects of my first year as a published author. Even before I started writing, I followed the announcements from some of the leading literary awards, in particular the Lammys, discovering new titles and cheering on my favourites. Only in my wildest dreams did I imagine I might one day be counted among the finalists. So, to be nominated not just for a Lambda Literary Award, but for a Bisexual Book Award and a Next Generation Indie Book Award, completely blew my mind!
  4. Emails from readers. This is something I hadn’t looked for and certainly never expected. There have been many occasions when I’ve loved a book so much that I simply had to write and let the author know. Now, having received emails from readers telling me how much they enjoyed my own novel, I’m so glad I did. Writing can be a lonely occupation at times, and frequently a frustrating one, but knowing there are people out there who have derived pleasure from your work makes it all worthwhile.
  5. The Beaten Track family. I’m extremely fortunate to have got to know Debbie McGowan, a talented writer herself, as well as a first-class editor and publisher, who always works so hard and is so unfailingly patient with the demands of her authors. I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed interacting with my fellow writers at Beaten Track Publishing, not to mention having the chance to read some of their work. It’s a wonderful community to belong to, so warm and welcoming, and it’s a privilege to be a part of it.

To each and every one of you out there who has read Caught Inside, regardless of whether you loved or hated it, no matter if my characters captured your heart or filled you with the irresistible urge to slap them…I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for taking a chance on a debut writer, and for making this, my first year as a published author, a truly memorable and magical experience. I couldn’t have done any of this without you, and your support and encouragement means the world to me.

Luke believes he has his life figured out…and then he meets Theo.

It should have been simple—a summer spent with his girlfriend Zara at her family’s holiday cottage in Cornwall. Seventeen-year-old Luke Savage jumps at the chance, envisioning endless hours of sunbathing on the private beach and riding the waves on his beloved surfboard. He isn’t interested in love. Though his rugged good looks and lazy charm mean he can have his pick of girls, he has no intention of falling for anyone.

Nothing prepares Luke for his reaction to Theo, the sensitive Oxford undergraduate who is Zara’s cousin and closest friend. All at once, he is plunged along a path of desire and discovery that has him questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. No one, especially Zara, must find out; what he and Theo have is too new, too fragile. But as the deceit spirals beyond their control, people are bound to get hurt, Luke most of all.

Caught Inside was named a finalist in the 29th Annual Lambda Literary Awards for Best Gay Romance, the 5th Annual Bisexual Book Awards for Best Young Adult Novel, and the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards for Best LGBT Fiction.

About Jamie Deacon

Author Bio

Jamie lives in a tranquil spot close to the River Thames in Berkshire, England, and has always been just a little out of place—the only redhead in a family of brunettes; an introvert far more at ease with dogs than with people; a connoisseur of simple pleasures in a society intent on the quest for wealth and fame. Despite an outward cynicism, Jamie is a romantic at heart, and, when not immersed in a book, can mostly be found writing emotional stories where young men from all walks of life are thrust headlong into the breathless, euphoric, often painful whirlwind called love.
