When an affluent college-bound boy falls for a young artist, he must choose between the life that’s been mapped out for him and the chance at true love.
Tate Dawson, one of the heroes of Come What May, agreed to sit down for a brief interview with me here at Boys on the Brink. Give him a hand, folks!
What is your biggest fear?
Somehow losing custody of my youngest sister Marnie, and seeing her back in foster care. We were all orphaned when I was sixteen and put into care, and I worked my ass off to get emancipated so I could get them out. But Marnie…she had a horrible experience while in care, and even though we’ve always gotten great reports from our social worker, it’s still my worst fear. She won’t be eighteen for a few more years.
What is your most prized possession?
My apartment. I mean, it’s not technically a possession, since I do pay a modest rent, but it’s my home. I’ve been lucky enough to have never been homeless, but my best friend Marc lived and worked the streets for three years. We both work at a homeless shelter and try to provide a safe place for other kids like Marc was. We both know the value of having a place to live.
What do you enjoy doing on your days off?
Spending time with my boyfriend, Jonas. He has a daytime job, and I work vampire hours, so we don’t get a lot of time together. Especially not in large chunks, so when one of us isn’t sleeping, we like to go out and do things. Even something as simple as dinner at a local diner. Or a walk down by the Brandywine.
Your best childhood memory?
My dad teaching me to ride my first bike. He was a really good dad when I was young. We did all those father-son things you see in movies. Catch, bike riding, washing the car on a hot summer day. And then he hurt his back, got addicted to pain pills, and started drinking. And all that good stuff stopped. So yeah, learning to ride a bike.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I’m not sure. With any luck, Addyson will be independent and on her own, and Marnie will be in college. Hopefully away from home. Wherever I am, I hope Jonas is still with me. And I hope Marc is settled down and happy with someone. He says he doesn’t mind being single, but he does. I know him too well. All I know about five years from now is that I want to be as happy and in love as I am now.

Jonas needs Tate. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Or at least, he doesn’t want to admit it. Because there is no way Jonas Ashcroft is gay. He’s a straight, carefree frat boy player, just like any good son of a conservative state senator. If only his struggle to convince everyone—especially himself—didn’t leave him so miserable. No matter how many girls or bottles he drowns himself in, Jonas can neither escape nor accept who he is.
Enter Tate. He’s smart, confident, and instantly sees right through Jonas’s surly exterior. Sure, he’s done things in life he’s not proud of, but he knows who he is and what he wants. And what he wants is Jonas. As their easy friendship intensifies into something more, Tate introduces Jonas to a life he’s never known. One filled with acceptance and sex and a love that terrifies and excites them both.
But some inner demons refuse to be shaken off so easily. When Jonas’s old life barges in, he faces a shattering choice, one that could destroy everything he and Tate have fought so hard for. Sometimes love just isn’t enough—and sometimes it’s exactly what you need.
